Thanaka: The Traditional Skin-Brightening Ingredient Modern Labs Are Studying

Thanaka, made from the daisy extract Bellis perennis, has two separate bodies of evidence behind it, and they're not equally strong. Independent lab studies support its tyrosinase-inhibiting and UV-protective activity. The stronger claim you'll see elsewhere, that it "significantly lightens skin and age spots," traces back to the ingredient's commercial supplier, not an independent peer-reviewed trial. Thanaka itself has been used in Myanmar and parts of Southeast Asia for centuries, traditionally as a ground paste applied to the face for sun protection and a smoother-looking complexion. The extract form used in modern formulations, Bellis perennis (daisy) extract, is a more concentrated and standardized version of the same underlying plant chemistry.

What independent research actually shows

Two things are reasonably well supported outside of supplier-funded research:

Tyrosinase inhibition. Lab studies using melanoma cell lines have shown Thanaka extract inhibits tyrosinase through multiple pathways, not just one. Multi-pathway inhibition is a meaningfully different result from single-mechanism inhibition. It means the extract is interfering with pigment production at more than one point in the process, at least in a cell-culture setting.

UVA protection in human keratinocytes. A study on this is indexed at PubMed (ID 34175580), and it found a photoprotective effect specifically in human skin cells exposed to UVA radiation. This one matters because it's human cell-derived, not animal or synthetic-model data, even though it's still a lab study rather than a trial on living skin over time.

Both of these are legitimate, citable findings. Research suggests Thanaka has real anti-pigmentation and UV-protective mechanisms at the cellular level.

Where the claim gets murkier

The strongest consumer-facing claim about Thanaka (that it visibly lightens skin and age spots in vivo, meaning tested on living skin rather than in a dish) comes from data published by CLR Berlin, which sells Thanaka extract commercially under the trade name Belides. That's a legitimate ingredient supplier, and companies that sell active ingredients do run their own efficacy studies to market them. But supplier-funded, supplier-published data is a different category of evidence from an independent, peer-reviewed clinical trial, and it's worth being clear about which one you're looking at whenever an ingredient's stronger claims trace back to the company selling it.

We're disclosing that distinction here because it's the kind of detail that usually gets smoothed over in ingredient marketing. A brand can technically say "clinically shown to lighten skin" and be citing real data that just might not be independently replicated. We'd rather tell you where a claim comes from than let the phrase "clinically shown" carry more weight than it's earned.

Why we still use it

Given all that, our reasoning for including Thanaka in a moisturiser is similar to our reasoning for saffron and red sandalwood in the Kumkumadi Moisturiser (see our post on that formula): a documented, multi-pathway mechanism at the cellular level is a real reason to include an ingredient, even without a finished independent human trial behind the headline consumer claim. We're not claiming Thanaka will visibly lighten age spots on your skin. We're saying the lab-level evidence for pigment-pathway interference and UV protection is solid enough to justify formulating with it, and we'll tell you honestly where the stronger claim comes from if you ask.

How Thanaka compares to our other brightening actives

If you're choosing between products, it helps to know that our ingredient shelf has a range of evidence strength, not one uniform standard. Niacinamide, used in our Rice Brightening Serum and Under Eye Gel, has multiple human randomized controlled trials behind it: a 2002 study in the British Journal of Dermatology and a 2013 double-blind study both showed measurable reductions in hyperpigmentation over 4-8 weeks. Thanaka and the Kumkumadi actives (saffron, red sandalwood) sit at an earlier stage of the evidence pipeline: real mechanism, not yet a finished human trial. Neither tier is "better" in an absolute sense; they're suited to different roles in a routine, and we think you should be able to see the difference.

A practical way to use this information

If independent, human-trial-backed evidence is your priority, lean toward niacinamide-based products for a brightening goal, and use ingredients like Thanaka, saffron, and red sandalwood as supporting actives in a broader formula rather than the sole active you're relying on for a specific, measurable result.
