Niacinamide, often used alongside or instead of vitamin C, has similarly strong data: a 2002 study in the British Journal of Dermatology found it reduced hyperpigmentation and suppressed melanosome transfer after four weeks versus a vehicle control, and a 2013 double-blind study of 42 women found a combination of niacinamide and tranexamic acid produced a significant reduction in facial hyperpigmentation over eight weeks.
There's an important caveat even within this stronger evidence tier: the literature on effective topical vitamin C assumes concentrations above 8% with sustained, leave-on contact time. What the Kumkumadi ingredient research actually shows
Saffron's active compound, crocin, inhibits tyrosinase and protects against UVA damage in human keratinocyte and fibroblast cell cultures, and separately shows anti-tyrosinase activity in mouse melanoma cell lines. Red sandalwood, native to the Eastern Ghats of South India, contains santalin, also shown to inhibit tyrosinase in lab studies, and a 2018 study in Photochemistry and Photobiology found the extract protected skin fibroblasts from UV-induced collagen degradation via the TGF-β/Smad pathway.
Every one of those results is real, and every one of them was measured in a dish or in an animal model, not on human skin over weeks of actual use. Research suggests both ingredients interrupt pigment production at the cellular level. Neither has a published human clinical trial demonstrating visible brightening on real skin.
So which one should you actually use
It depends on what you need from a product, not just which ingredient has "won" more studies.
If you want a brightening result you can point to a specific human trial for (a defined percentage improvement, a defined timeline, a defined study population), vitamin C or niacinamide is the ingredient with that kind of evidence behind it. If pigmentation or dullness is a specific, primary concern you're actively treating, that evidence tier is where we'd point you first.
If you're looking for a moisturiser that supports general skin tone and antioxidant protection as part of a broader daily ritual, rather than a single targeted active doing all the work, Kumkumadi's ingredient profile is a reasonable choice, though it's just not the ingredient we'd cite if someone asked for the strongest available evidence for treating pigmentation specifically.
A lot of routines actually use both, in different roles: a vitamin C or niacinamide serum as the targeted brightening step, and a Kumkumadi-based moisturiser as the daily hydration and antioxidant layer underneath or after it.
