Inside Our Kumkumadi Moisturiser: Why We Still Use an Ayurvedic Formula

We still use saffron and red sandalwood in our Kumkumadi Face Moisturiser because the lab research on both ingredients lines up with what they're traditionally used for: brightening and protecting skin from everyday UV stress. That research is cell-culture and animal-model work, not human clinical trials, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than let "Ayurvedic" do the talking for us.

A lot of skincare brands treat traditional ingredients as a marketing shortcut. Say "Ayurveda," add a saffron strand to the product photo, skip the actual mechanism. We think that undersells what's genuinely interesting about these ingredients, and it also means nobody tells customers what the evidence really supports. So here's the honest version.

What's actually in the formula, and why

Kumkumadi oil, the classical Ayurvedic base our moisturiser draws from, centers on two ingredients we can speak to with real citations: saffron (via its active compound crocin) and red sandalwood. Both have a documented mechanism for skin brightening. Neither has been tested on human skin in a controlled clinical trial, at least not in anything we could find in the literature. That gap is common across Ayurvedic ingredients generally. They've been used for centuries, but the kind of double-blind human trial that modern dermatology relies on is expensive, slow, and rarely gets funded for ingredients that aren't patentable.

That doesn't make the lab evidence meaningless. It means we should describe it precisely instead of rounding it up.

Saffron and crocin: what the cell studies show

Crocin, the compound responsible for saffron's color and much of its bioactivity, inhibits tyrosinase (the enzyme responsible for producing melanin) in human keratinocyte and fibroblast cell cultures. A study on this appears in the research indexed at PubMed (ID 29893408), and it also showed crocin protecting these cultured skin cells against UVA-induced damage. Separately, saffron's anti-tyrosinase activity has also been demonstrated in mouse melanoma cell lines (PubMed ID 29237384), useful supporting data but animal-derived, not human.

Put plainly: research suggests crocin can interrupt the pigment-production pathway and defend cells against some UV stress, in a lab setting. We're not going to tell you it's proven to brighten skin on a living person's face, because that trial doesn't exist yet.

Red sandalwood: a South Indian ingredient with a real regional story

Red sandalwood, botanically Pterocarpus santalinus, is native to the Eastern Ghats of South India, not a generic "ancient Ayurvedic" ingredient sourced from nowhere in particular, but a tree that actually grows in the hill forests a few hundred kilometers from where we're based in Tamil Nadu. That regional detail matters to us more than it might to a brand formulating from a different part of the world.

The ingredient's brightening reputation traces to santalin, a compound shown in lab studies to inhibit tyrosinase, similar in principle to crocin's mechanism. A 2018 study published in Photochemistry and Photobiology also found that red sandalwood extract protected skin fibroblasts from UV-induced collagen degradation, working through the TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway. Again, this is cell-culture work: fibroblasts in a dish, not skin on a face over weeks of use. Research suggests a genuine protective and pigment-modulating effect. It hasn't been tested as a finished clinical outcome in humans.

Why we formulate with weak-evidence ingredients at all

If the evidence is only lab-based, why put saffron and red sandalwood in a product rather than waiting for better data or switching to something like niacinamide, where the human trial evidence is much stronger?

Two reasons. First, mechanism plausibility matters even without a finished human trial. A compound that reliably inhibits tyrosinase in multiple independent cell studies is a legitimate candidate ingredient, not a folk remedy with no biochemical basis. Second, this is a moisturiser, not a single-active brightening serum. It's formulated to support the general goals of hydration, antioxidant protection, and gentle tone-support together, alongside ingredients like niacinamide that do have stronger backing elsewhere in our range. We're not asking Kumkumadi to do the job of a clinically-proven brightening serum on its own.

Some of that experience is now getting backed up in labs, compound by compound. Some of it hasn't been studied yet at all. We'd rather sit in that uncertainty honestly than manufacture false certainty in either direction, dismissing the tradition or overselling the science.
