Thyme

Cedarwood
Cedarwood oil is another long-standing traditional ingredient in hair care, often included for scalp comfort and its role as a carrier or aromatic component alongside other actives. As with thyme, we're not aware of human clinical trials isolating cedarwood's effect on hair growth specifically. It's traditionally used, and it's included here for that reason, not because of a clinical result we can point to.
Aloe vera
Aloe vera's hydrating and soothing properties are well-established generally, across a broad range of skin and scalp applications. This part isn't in question. What's less specifically studied is aloe vera's effect on hair growth itself, as opposed to scalp comfort and hydration, which is a different, better-supported claim. We include it for scalp hydration and soothing, and we'd rather describe it that way than imply a growth claim the research doesn't specifically make.
Neem
Neem has documented antibacterial activity in lab settings: zone-of-inhibition studies (a standard lab method for testing whether a substance inhibits bacterial growth on a petri dish) have shown various neem preparations performing well against certain bacteria, including some linked to skin and scalp issues. A 2022 study using basil-water extract, tested under similar lab conditions, even outperformed 0.1% salicylic acid against acne-related bacteria in vitro. But a petri dish result is not the same as a human clinical trial, and it doesn't establish that neem clears anything on skin or scalp when applied outside a lab. We include neem for its traditional use in scalp care and its lab-documented antibacterial activity, not as a proven treatment for any specific scalp condition.
Why we're not calling any of this "clinically proven"
Evidence comes in tiers, and it matters which tier a claim sits in. A cell-culture or petri-dish study tells you something happened to bacteria or cells in a lab, under controlled conditions that don't fully mirror a scalp in daily life. A human clinical trial, like the rosemary oil study, tells you something happened in actual people, over a defined time period, measured against a comparison group. Those aren't the same strength of evidence, and it's misleading to describe them with the same language.
So: thyme, cedarwood, aloe vera, and neem are ingredients with traditional use and, in some cases, lab-based supporting research. We describe them as "traditionally used for" scalp health or "lab studies suggest" antimicrobial activity, not "clinically proven to grow hair," because no study we're aware of has measured that specific outcome for these four ingredients in humans.
Where rosemary fits differently
Rosemary oil is the exception in this formula, evidence-wise. It has an actual human trial (100 participants, 6 months) showing a hair-count increase comparable to minoxidil 2%, with less scalp itching. How the ingredients work together in one formula
A common question is why a serum would combine a well-evidenced active with three weaker-evidenced ones instead of using rosemary oil on its own. The honest answer is formulation, not marketing: rosemary oil alone in a carrier is one option, but thyme and neem are included for their documented antimicrobial lab activity relevant to scalp condition, cedarwood for its traditional role in scalp comfort, and aloe vera specifically to offset the drying or slightly irritating feel some people get from essential-oil-heavy scalp products. None of the four supporting ingredients is claimed to boost rosemary's own effect on hair count.
