Chemical Sunscreen vs Mineral Sunscreen: Which Should You Use in India?

Chemical and mineral sunscreens both protect your skin from UV damage, and both can do the job well if you use enough of them and reapply on schedule. The real difference is in how they work on the skin and how they feel wearing them through an Indian afternoon: chemical filters tend to sit lighter and absorb faster, mineral filters tend to sit on top of the skin and are less likely to cause a stinging reaction. Neither is automatically "better." Which one suits you depends more on your skin type, your tolerance for a slight cast, and whether you'll actually reapply it than on the filter category itself.

How chemical sunscreens work

Chemical (organic) UV filters absorb ultraviolet radiation and convert it into a small amount of heat, which the skin releases. Common chemical filters include avobenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene, often combined to cover both UVA and UVB wavelengths. Because they're formulated to blend into the skin, chemical sunscreens usually feel lighter and layer more easily under makeup, a practical reason a lot of people default to them for daily wear.

The tradeoff: some chemical filters take about 15-20 minutes after application to become fully effective, and a small percentage of people find certain chemical filters irritating, especially on sensitised or acne-prone skin.

How mineral sunscreens work

Mineral (inorganic) filters, namely zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on top of the skin and work primarily by scattering and reflecting UV radiation, rather than absorbing it (though the mechanism is more nuanced than the old "physical block" explanation suggests; both absorption and scattering happen at a molecular level). Mineral sunscreens are effective immediately on application and are generally the first recommendation for sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure skin, since they're less likely to cause irritation.

The tradeoff is the one most Indian users already know: a visible white or grey cast on deeper skin tones, a thicker texture, and a tendency to sit heavier in humidity. Formulation has improved this a lot in recent years — tinted mineral and hybrid formulas reduce cast significantly — but it's still the more common complaint.

Why the Indian climate makes reapplication the real variable

Most of India runs hot and humid for a large part of the year, and that changes how any sunscreen behaves regardless of filter type. Sweat and oil break down the protective film faster, and outdoor UV exposure during commute hours or a lunchtime walk can be more intense than the SPF number alone suggests. A dermatologist's standard advice (reapply every 2-3 hours when outdoors, more often if you're sweating heavily or swimming) matters more for your actual protection than choosing chemical over mineral or the reverse. A high-SPF sunscreen applied once in the morning and never touched again offers a lot less real-world protection than a moderate SPF reapplied properly.

SPF and PA+++: What the Numbers Actually Mean

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays, the ones mainly responsible for sunburn. PA (Protection Grade of UVA), rated in plus signs up to PA++++, measures protection against UVA rays, which penetrate deeper and are more associated with premature ageing and long-term skin damage. A sunscreen labelled "broad spectrum" is formulated to cover both. In India's UV conditions, a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 50 PA+++ or higher is a reasonable daily standard for most skin types, whether the filter system is chemical, mineral, or a hybrid of both.

Which one should you actually use

If you have sensitive, reactive, or acne-prone skin, or you've reacted to sunscreens before, mineral or hybrid formulas are the safer starting point. If you want a lighter, no-cast finish for daily wear under makeup and haven't had reactions before, a well-formulated chemical or hybrid sunscreen is a reasonable choice. If you're outdoors for long stretches (commuting, running errands at midday, spending time by water), the filter type matters less than the habit of reapplying and using enough product (roughly a quarter teaspoon for the face alone, more than most people apply).
